All children must be safe and well cared for.

Kids Haven provides invaluable care and support for children, young people and families in Benoni and across the Ekurhuleni metro. Since its inception in 1992 as a shelter for street children, the organisation has expanded to a Child and Youth Care Facility with space for 170 children and young people needing protection and care.

Kids Haven goes beyond providing care in the Child and Youth Care Facility by working to support families in creating safe, nurturing homes for children and continuing to offer care and support to children and young people after they leave the facility.

Sam Mokgopha, better known as Uncle Sam, has been advocating for street children’s rights since joining Kids Haven in January 2001. Prior to taking over from founder Moira Simpson in 2020, his roles at Kids Haven included being the first Family Reunification Manager, the Residential Care Manager and Assistant Director [Programme Manager].

Sam’s commitment to the rights of children and the youth has always extended beyond the walls of Kids Haven. In 2004 he assisted with the coordination of the first census for street children in Ekurhuleni. He also ensured that street children were recognised as children in need of care and protection in the new Children’s Act, Sam and Moira presented to the parliamentary portfolio committee to assist in shaping policy for child welfare in South Africa.

He holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Johannesburg, and a degree in education as well as a degree in community development.
