A pause to smell the daisies

There’s something wonderful about pausing and reflecting on all that is good around us. The end of February marks the end of the financial year for Kids Haven and we have so much to appreciate and celebrate. Here are a few snippets we wanted to share:

  • New website

We are very excited to be launching our new, fresh and improved website in March. Cubic Ice has been working hard to put the site together ensuring it shows the world all that we believe in at Kids Haven and the lives we are impacting through our pillars of care: Preventative Care, Incare and Aftercare. We extend our many thanks to them for their time and effort. We can’t wait to share our new site with you all!

  • Monthly hiking fun

The Mountain Club of SA has partnered with Kids Haven and our children and young people will be going on monthly hikes from now on. This is very exciting for us as these hikes teach our children so much about teamwork, perseverance, appreciating our beautiful country and the importance of caring for nature. We will be sharing some great photos and stories from these hikes coming up.

  • Expanding our world of art and culture

The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) has kindly invited Kids Haven to the art gallery in March. We believe that learning to appreciate art and culture is very important for our children and their caregivers. It teaches them to embrace diversity and inspires them to seek out their own individual talents and gifts. We are very grateful to Javett-UP for this opportunity.

  • Our students are settling into university and thrilled to be there

Ntando, Jabu and Shaun, three of our youth, started at university this month and are settling in so well. Here are some updates:

Ntando started her lectures at Rhodes this month and is enjoying them. She is already looking for some holiday work experience with a publisher or media house. She had a few technical hiccups with her laptop – a first test for her to independently figure out ways to get things fixed and sorted out. She is doing very well.

Jabu, who is studying through UNISA, had his orientation week this week and his first class started last Thursday. You’ll now find him on his laptop on Thursday evenings getting into the world of finance.

Shaun, who was part of the Kids Haven Pathways Program, is in KZN and has settled in really well and seems to be enjoying his start. These are his words: ‘I am enjoying my classes a lot! Yesterday I was writing an assignment in Word and it was way too easy to type and navigate through the software. Today I am planning to study since I have one class at around 14:00.”

We are so pleased that these young people are committed, enthusiastic and have an opportunity to study. We wish them well and applaud all those donors, caregivers and the Kids Haven Aftercare department who gave so generously to help these young people achieve.

  • A water supply solution for our boys

We are extremely relieved and happy that a solution has been found to ensure our boys centre receives a steady supply of water. Many thanks to the SA Muslim Charitable Trust for making this possible. We have been struggling with water supply every time Ekurhuleni throttles or cuts water and this will become a problem of the past when the project is completed. We are so grateful.

  • Solar panels almost complete

We have been installing solar panels at the Kids Haven village for several months and are pleased to report that this project is almost complete. This means no load shedding woes for us many thanks to Kinderfonds Mamas for funding this.

Shout out to our monthly debit order donors – Thank you!

A special shout out this month goes to our monthly debit order donors. Thank you for your year of giving. We appreciate you so much. Your donations ensure we can rely on regular income which really helps us budget and plan. Our children have been well cared for, protected and educated because of your generosity every month. The tax receipts have been completed for the tax year ending 28 February 2025.

If you would consider increasing your monthly donations for this year we would be so grateful. Please email us on hello@kidshaven.co.za and we can assist.
