Why Kids Justice Programme
While much progress has been made over recent years to realise children’s rights in South Africa, there is still a vast gap. Very limited resources have been applied in the public and justice sectors to support, assist, and represent children. This is most apparent for children living without documentation.
These structural gaps in the system are ever-widening instead of shrinking, and are especially obvious in child welfare, education, health-care, child protection, and justice systems. As a result children are being unfairly and illegally exposed to victimisation, secondary trauma, severe neglect, and in some cases, even death.
With this is mind, Kids Haven has established the Kids Justice Programme to defend, uphold, protect and promote children’s rights. The Kids Justice programme (within Kids Haven NPC) operates as a law clinic for children. We act as a mouthpiece for those who cannot speak or articulate their wishes. The Kids Justice Programme allows legal staff, professional care givers and social workers, to monitor children’s cases vigilantly. This much needed intervention allows us to provide the necessary facilities to safeguard the child, while acting on behalf of the child in need. As a result, we hope to eradicate the abuse of neglected and undocumented children.
